Games to play with your toddler

Playing games with your toddler is a great way to bond with them, encourage development, and create cherished memories. Here are some fun games to play with a toddler:

Peek-a-boo: This classic game helps toddlers develop object permanence and learn that things continue to exist even when hidden. Hide your face with your hands or an object like a blanket and say "Where's [your name]?" Toddlers will giggle with delight when you reveal yourself again.

Pattycake: Clapping games like patty cake help toddlers develop motor and cognitive skills in a fun way. Gently clap your toddler's hands together and move them in different motions and patterns. Toddlers can start with simple clapping and progress to more complex motions.

Hide and seek: As toddlers get closer to age two, hide and seek becomes more fun and helps build problem-solving skills. Hide small toys or other objects for your toddler to find. Start with just a few hiding spots and make it easier or harder as their skills improve.

Pretend play: Engage in pretend play with your toddler using toys, costumes, and props. Pretend to be princesses, superheroes, animals, or anything your toddler imagines. Pretend play sparks creativity and language development. Here are some pretend play toys and props that will have your toddler playing for hours!

Building with blocks: Blocks help toddlers develop motor and cognitive skills through stacking, nesting, and creating structures. Blocks come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, and colors perfect for toddlers. Build together and let your toddler's imagination guide the constructions. Here are some of my favorite blocks.

Playing make-believe: Make-believe play, also known as imaginative play, helps toddlers develop socially and emotionally. Take on roles like a doctor, teacher, chef, or anything else. Act out scenarios together using props and costumes. Make-believe play leads to complex storytelling and language use.

Playing games with your toddler helps build connections, supports development, and creates cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Simple games like peek-a-boo, patty cake, hide and seek, pretend play, building with blocks, and make-believe play provide opportunities for learning and growth in a fun and engaging way. Making the time to play with your toddler each day will help ensure they reach developmental milestones and become confident, creative, and socially adept individuals.
